Dubai CV format (2026): free template and what Gulf recruiters check
The CV format Gulf recruiters expect: how many pages, which keywords and where they go, photo, personal details, notice period, and a free template.
12 min readUpdated 14 October 2026

Short answer
A free Dubai CV template (Word and PDF)
Most Dubai CV templates online are designed to look good, with two columns, icons and a photo, and that is exactly what applicant tracking systems read wrongly. Ours is plain on purpose: one column, standard headings, month and year on every role, the relocation, visa and notice lines at the top, contact details in the body of the page and no photo. Every line in brackets is yours to fill in. Not sure whether to send the Word file or the PDF? See CV as PDF or Word.
Filled it in? Run it through the free ATS check to see how the software reads it, then the CV review marks every line a Dubai recruiter would question, with a fix.
What a Dubai CV looks like
A Dubai CV is close to a UK or Indian one: newest job first, a short summary at the top, then experience, skills and education. Bayt, one of the Gulf's biggest job sites, recommends 1 to 2 pages. What's different is the top: Gulf recruiters expect personal details that a UK CV leaves out, because the first thing they check is whether you need a visa and how soon you can start.
- Your name, phone number with the country code, email, and links to LinkedIn and GitHub or a portfolio.
- A personal details line: nationality, visa status, where you live now and your notice period.
- A short summary: your role, years of experience, main stack and your strongest result. See how to write the summary, with tech examples.
- Experience, newest first, with what you built and what changed because of it.
- Skills, certifications and education.
A CV is only half of it: in Dubai, referrals and a visible portfolio decide more hires than applications do. Getting a tech job in Dubai from India covers the rest.
How long should a CV for Dubai be?
For most people, 2 pages. Michael Page Middle East puts it in one sentence: “Your CV should ideally cover no more than two pages and never more than three.” (its CV guide (opens in a new window)). Tiger Recruitment in Dubai allows one exception: “Keep your CV to two pages, unless you have an extensive work history and cannot physically fit everything in.” (its CV tips (opens in a new window)). And Bayt, the Gulf job site, recommends 1 to 2 pages and says CVs of 3 pages “are rarely read in full” (its guide to the UAE CV (opens in a new window)).
| Who says it | For | Pages |
|---|---|---|
| Michael Page Middle East (opens in a new window) | The Gulf | 2, never more than 3 |
| Tiger Recruitment (opens in a new window) | Dubai | 2, more only for an extensive work history |
| Bayt (opens in a new window) | The UAE | 1 to 2; 1 for a fresh graduate |
| Prospects (opens in a new window) | The UK | No longer than 2; 3 may be needed with a lot of experience |
| Michael Page UK (opens in a new window) | The UK | No longer than 2 |
| Tech Interview Handbook (opens in a new window) | US tech companies | 1 |
| Our CV review | Dubai | 2; 3 only with more than 15 years of experience |
You may have been told that a CV has to fit on one page. That is the convention for applications to the big US tech companies: the Tech Interview Handbook, written for those applications, tells you to use only 1 page (its guide (opens in a new window)). It isn't the convention in the Gulf, and it isn't in the UK either: Prospects, the UK graduate careers site, quotes a university careers service that recommends CVs “no longer than two A4 pages” (Prospects (opens in a new window)), and Michael Page UK says a CV “should be no longer than two pages” (Michael Page UK (opens in a new window)). So a UK CV is already the right length for Dubai, and needs only the personal details a UK CV leaves out. A CV cut down to one page for US-style applications has room to grow: use it for the results of your recent roles.
The right length follows your experience, and the same sources say how:
- A first job: 1 page. Bayt says fresh graduates should aim for it.
- Some years of work: 2 pages. Bayt draws the line at more than 5 years of experience, and adds “but only if every line adds value”.
- A long career: 3 pages at the very most, which is Michael Page's “never more than three”. Prospects in the UK says a three-page CV “might be needed for those in high-level roles or for people who have gained a lot of experience”. Gergely Orosz, who wrote a book on tech CVs, on senior engineers: “The more experienced you are, the trickier it is to balance fitting all your experience on one or two pages, versus focusing on key areas.” (his book's site (opens in a new window)).
Our CV review checks the file against the same limits: 2 pages, and 3 only with more than 15 years of experience (the rule and its sources). To get there, cut older roles to a line each before you shrink the font or the margins. What to cut from a tech CV is in software engineer CV for Dubai.
The personal details Gulf recruiters expect
Bayt says (opens in a new window) a UAE CV normally lists your nationality, visa status and date of birth. That's custom, not law, but it helps a recruiter sort people who need sponsorship from people who can start now.
- Nationality: say it plainly.
- Visa status: for example "Indian national, based in Pune, needs employment visa sponsorship", or "UAE resident on an employment visa".
- Location: your city now, and when you could move.
- Notice period: say how long yours is, and whether it can be bought out. UAE law sets notice between 30 and 90 days, so Dubai employers are used to waiting for good people.
- Date of birth: normal in the Gulf, but no law requires it. Include it if you're comfortable.
- Salary: leave your current pay off the CV. When a form asks for your expected salary, give it in AED a month.
Each of these is a check in our review, with its sources: see Dubai market fit below.
Photo or no photo
Bayt calls a professional photo “expected rather than optional” on a UAE CV. No law requires one. If you add one, use a recent head-and-shoulders photo against a plain background, dressed as you would be for the interview. Where a company's careers site gives its own instructions, follow them.

The labour law bans discrimination in hiring on grounds of race, colour, sex, religion, national or social origin or disability, so none of those may be used to screen you out, with or without a photo. Whether to include one is your choice: our review never counts it as a fault (the rule and its sources). Keep the photo out of the file you upload to company careers sites, though: tracking systems read pictures badly (why).
The checks behind our CV review
Everything below is a check our CV review runs, 52 in all, from 70 sources: recruiters, job boards, ATS vendors, the labour law and people who got hired in Dubai, each linked with its date. Where sources disagree (4 checks), we show both sides and never count it as a fault.

ATS and format: getting past the software
Large employers read CVs with an applicant tracking system before a person does. These checks are about the file itself: whether the software can read it, in the right order.
A former in-house recruiter at a big UAE employer describes the tracking system handling “the hundreds of applications that came in every week” (on Reddit (opens in a new window); the poster now sells CV services). Across all industries, a Dubai job ad on LinkedIn gets about 285 applicants in its first week, according to one study of LinkedIn ads (opens in a new window). After the software, a person skims it: Bayt says a CV has about 6 seconds to make an impression. For how the software reads a CV and what trips it up, see what an ATS-friendly CV is.

Greenhouse is the most common, with 10 of the 40. They differ in detail but trip over the same things: columns, tables, text boxes, pictures and contact details in the page header. The employers we track.
Name, email and phone in the body of the page
Put your name, email and phone number as ordinary text at the top of the page, not in the header or footer and not in a text box.
Why it matters: Parsers often skip headers, footers and text boxes, so the recruiter's system ends up without your contact details.
Sources
- Greenhouse Support (opens in a new window): Unsuccessful resume parse ·
A small file
Keep the file under 2.5 MB: remove embedded images and export the PDF at standard quality.
Why it matters: Greenhouse, used by many Dubai tech employers, documents large files as a reason a CV fails to parse.
Sources
- Greenhouse Support (opens in a new window): Unsuccessful resume parse ·
A Word file or a PDF with real text
Send a .docx, or a PDF exported from your editor so the text can be selected. A scanned page or a CV saved as an image has no text for the software to read.
Why it matters: Applicant tracking systems read the text layer. A CV that is a picture can't be parsed, so a recruiter has to type it in by hand, or skips it.

Newest role first, one date format
List roles from the most recent backwards and write every date the same way (month and year, ending in Present for the current role).
Why it matters: Mixed date formats and orders confuse parsers and make a recruiter work out your timeline.

Two pages, three only for long careers
Keep it to 2 pages; 3 only with more than 15 years of experience. Cut older roles to a line rather than shrinking the font.
Why it matters: Recruiters in the region agree on two pages and never more than three; posters on r/DubaiJobs say longer CVs simply aren't read.

No spaced-out letters, icons for words or text in images
Write headings as normal words, not S P A C E D letters. Use words instead of icons for phone and email, and keep text out of pictures and word art.
Why it matters: Greenhouse lists letter-spaced text, graphics and word art among the reasons a CV fails to parse.

Standard section headings
Use plain headings the software knows (Summary, Experience, Education, Skills, Certifications) and format them all the same way.
Why it matters: Inconsistent section formatting is a documented parse failure; clear headings also help a recruiter who gives the first read a few seconds.

One column, no tables for experience or skills
Lay the CV out in a single column, top to bottom. Keep experience and skills out of tables and text boxes; a sidebar is the usual culprit.
Why it matters: Columns and tables are on Greenhouse's list of parse failures and can scramble the order of your experience. Good systems cope better, so this is a strong recommendation rather than a rule: our report shows you what the software actually read.

As long as your CV is in order and doesn't use graphics you should be fine.
No photo in the version you upload to company sites
If you use a photo at all, keep it for the version you send to local recruiters or Bayt. Leave it out of the file you upload to company careers sites.
Why it matters: Greenhouse lists photos among the causes of failed parsing. Whether to use a photo at all is your choice: sources disagree.

Moving from the UK
No photo is fine for IT roles in Dubai; your UK CV can stay as it is.
“they all make their own grading up. As long as your CV is in order and doesn't use graphics you should be fine.”
“HR doesn't bother reading a resume that's longer than two pages”
ATS keywords for your CV: where they come from and where they go
Every source we read points to the same place for keywords: the advert you are applying to. A Michael Page recruiter in the Gulf, on the first look at a CV: “Keywords: We match words on the CV and those on the client’s job description” (Michael Page Middle East (opens in a new window)). And Bayt says hiring managers in the UAE use tracking systems “that scan for keywords from the job description” (Bayt (opens in a new window)).
Where they come from. Read the advert and mark three kinds of word, then use its exact wording for the ones that are true of you:
- The role: the job title and level as the advert writes them, for the opening line of your summary. Your past job titles stay as they were.
- The tools and skills it names: languages, frameworks, cloud platforms, databases, methods.
- The certifications and qualifications it asks for by name.
Michael Page's advice for the Middle East: “Look at the job description and mirror the language where appropriate.” (what recruiters look for in a CV (opens in a new window)). The Tech Interview Handbook adds the full name beside a common abbreviation, such as Amazon Web Services for AWS (its guide (opens in a new window)).
Where they go. In three places:
- The summary. Bayt: “At minimum, adjust your professional summary and skills section to align with each role.” (Bayt (opens in a new window)). See the summary at the top of your CV.
- The skills line. Michael Page: “Group your skills clearly, for example technical, languages or systems. It helps both recruiters and AI tools pick them up faster.” (Michael Page Middle East (opens in a new window)).
- The bullets of the job where you used them. The Tech Interview Handbook says to put the advert's keywords under your skills and again in your work experience (its guide (opens in a new window)).
What not to do. Don't pile up words without context: the Tech Interview Handbook says “do not do keyword stuffing for the sake of it”, because a recruiter or a hiring manager reads the CV in the end (its guide (opens in a new window)). And don't add a word for a tool you haven't used. Our CV review's own rule: “Use the ad's own words for the skills and tools you really have, in your summary and in the role where you used them. Never add a skill you don't have.” (the rule and its sources). When you paste the advert, the review checks that your CV names at least 70% of the tools and skills it lists, and shows you the ones it couldn't find.
What Dubai adverts name most. Our own count, from the Dubai tech job ads we track:
| Item | Share of ads |
|---|---|
| machine learning | 14% |
| Python | 10% |
| CI/CD | 9% |
| SQL | 7% |
| AWS | 6% |
| Kubernetes | 6% |
| LLM | 6% |
| TypeScript | 5% |
The tools named most are machine learning (14%), Python (10%) and CI/CD (9%). Use the chart to decide what goes first in your skills line when you have the tool, never as a list to copy: the keywords that count are the ones in the advert you are answering. The same count for software engineer ads is in what Dubai ads ask for, and how we count is in how we get our numbers.
Keywords only help when software can read the file they are in: how a tracking system reads a CV, and what trips it up, is in what an ATS-friendly CV is. What a tech CV should hold, from the stack to the results, is in software engineer CV for Dubai. To test yours, the free ATS check shows what software reads from your file, and the CV review compares your CV with the advert you paste.
Impact: results, not duties
Once a person reads it, the CV has seconds to say what you do and what changed because of it. These checks are about the words.
Covers the key terms of the job ad
Use the ad's own words for the skills and tools you really have, in your summary and in the role where you used them. Never add a skill you don't have.
Why it matters: First screens are often keyword searches by people who don't know one tool from another; tailored applications get far more replies than mass ones.

Dubai market fit: what Gulf recruiters look for
Recruiters in Dubai sort candidates on a few facts before anything else: where you are, whether you need a visa, when you can start. These checks are what the region adds to a good CV anywhere.
| Item | Share of ads |
|---|---|
| Arabic | 2% |
| UAE or GCC experience | 2% |
| A degree | 10% |
| A certification | 4% |
Arabic comes up in 2% of them. An ad that mentions it, or Gulf experience, may still treat it as a plus rather than a must: read the ad, and put either on your CV only if it's true.
Apply early, too: Bayt says applications sent within 48 hours of an ad going up are more likely to be noticed.
No passport or Emirates ID numbers
Leave out passport, Emirates ID and other identity numbers; employers ask for them at offer stage. "Emirates ID: available on request" is enough.
Why it matters: A CV travels through many hands and job boards; identity numbers on it are a fraud risk.

Do they match or not?
Nationality stated (both, if you have two)
Add your nationality near the top; if you hold two, list both. It's your choice, but UAE recruiters and job boards expect it.
Why it matters: Work permits, Emiratisation quotas and visa costs depend on nationality, so recruiters and Bayt's profile forms ask for it.

UK CVs usually leave nationality out; for Dubai, add it near the top (both, if you have two). It's your choice, but recruiters expect it.
A reachable phone number with the country code
Give a number you answer, with the plus sign and your country code, plus WhatsApp if you use it. Never a fake UAE number: a UAE line needs an Emirates ID.
Why it matters: Some shortlisters can't dial abroad and read a foreign number as "not here"; others say it rarely decides anything. A reachable number and a clear start date cover both.

No CTC or LPA figures
Take your current CTC and expected LPA off the CV. Talk pay on the application form or the first call, in AED a month, after checking the Dubai range for your role.

No religion, caste, father's name or physical details

Languages stated truthfully
List languages at the level you'd use at work. Don't overstate Arabic: most tech roles don't need it, and an interviewer may test it.
Why it matters: Most Dubai tech ads don't ask for Arabic; overstating it costs credibility where it's checked (bank customer roles, government).

One line of context for a less-known employer
Under an employer most Dubai recruiters won't know, add one line: what it does, its size, its users. A famous name helps in a close call, but it won't open doors from abroad on its own.
Why it matters: Recruiters say a name the hiring manager recognises tips close calls; candidates with big names applying from abroad report silence all the same.

Get it seen: referrals beat portals
A good CV is half the job. Ask for referrals, message hiring managers directly, keep LinkedIn consistent with the CV, and tailor a few applications rather than sending many.

Photo, date of birth and marital status: your choice
These are optional and never a fault. Many UAE CVs include them and some headhunters pass them on; many multinationals prefer them left out. If you use a photo, make it a plain headshot and keep it out of the version you upload to company sites.
Why it matters: Sources disagree. UAE law bans discrimination on race, colour, sex, religion, national or social origin and disability, but not on age or marital status, so practice varies by employer.

Honesty and clarity: dates, titles and claims
Recruiters stop reading at the first thing that doesn't add up, and in the UAE degrees and documents are checked. These checks keep the CV believable.
Claims a recruiter can believe

Tech stack: what a tech CV should show
For tech roles, the stack, the scale and proof of your work carry as much weight as the job titles.
| Item | Fintech | Software | Proptech | E-commerce | Other industries | All |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Software engineer | 9 | 14 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 28 |
| Data scientist | 5 | 3 | 0 | 1 | 6 | 15 |
| AI engineer | 12 | 7 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 22 |
| Product manager | 9 | 4 | 3 | 1 | 1 | 18 |
| All tech roles | 67 | 38 | 14 | 7 | 16 | 142 |
| Item | Share of ads |
|---|---|
| Cloud (AWS, Azure, GCP) | 0% |
| Security (CISSP, OSCP…) | 0% |
The 72 ads that state the experience they want ask for a median of 4 years. Treat it as a guide, not a cut-off: the industry and level you come from matter too.
Start the attestation while you apply: see degree attestation. For what each role earns, see salaries in Dubai, and for open roles, IT jobs in Dubai. For what a tech CV should show and what to cut, see software engineer CV for Dubai.
Your industry, where Dubai hires

Changing an Indian or a UK CV for the Gulf
From an Indian CV:
- Drop the declaration, signature, father's name and "career objective". Put a short summary in their place.
- Give pay in AED a month when you're asked, not CTC in LPA.
- Name the client and the product, not only the services company: "payments platform for a UK bank" says more than the company name alone.
- State your notice period, and whether part of it can be bought out.
- Keep to 2 pages if you can and never more than 3, even with long experience: cut older roles to a line each.
From a UK CV:
- Add the personal details line (nationality, visa status, notice period), which UK CVs usually leave out.
- Decide on a photo: custom in the Gulf, your choice by law.
- Think about pay as a package: a Dubai offer splits basic salary, housing and other allowances, and the split changes your end-of-service gratuity.
The checks above that apply only to Indian or UK CVs are marked “Moving from”. See also moving to Dubai from India, moving to Dubai from the UK, and how gratuity is worked out for why the basic salary matters.
What the law says: discrimination, fees and your data
The labour law (opens in a new window) bans discrimination in hiring, in keeping a job and in its benefits on grounds of race, colour, sex, religion, national or social origin or disability. It gives women equal pay for the same work or work of equal value. Measures that raise the share of UAE nationals in work don't count as discrimination: that's Emiratisation, below.
Getting a job is free for you. Employers may not charge workers recruitment or employment fees, directly or indirectly, and recruitment agencies need a MOHRE licence. If anyone asks you to pay for a job, a visa or “processing”, walk away. Our list of IT recruiters shows each one's MOHRE licence.
Your CV is personal data. The UAE's data protection law (opens in a new window) bans processing personal data without consent, with exceptions such as the public interest and legal duties. Don't put your passport number or a copy of your passport on a CV; share them only once you have an offer.
Once you're hired, probation lasts at most 6 months. Probation, notice and resigning in the UAE explains the rest, and when an offer comes, check it before you sign.
Emiratisation and what it means for your application
Emiratisation sets targets for hiring UAE nationals in private companies. Firms with 50 or more staff must raise the share of Emiratis in skilled jobs by 2% a year, and firms with 20 to 49 staff in specified sectors must hire and keep at least 1 UAE national, says MOHRE (opens in a new window).
For you, that means a small share of jobs is set aside, usually in ads marked “UAE nationals only”. Skip those: your CV won't be considered. Most other jobs are open to anyone, and most people in Dubai's private sector came from abroad. We flag nationals-only ads on every job in IT jobs in Dubai.
